Bertone Reimagines the Iconic Runabout as a Modern Supercar

Bertone, the storied Italian design house, has unveiled a stunning reinterpretation of its 1969 Autobianchi A112 Runabout concept. This time, however, the Runabout isn’t a quirky city car but a full-fledged supercar, promising a blend of retro-futuristic style and high-performance engineering.

The new Runabout faithfully echoes the original’s distinctive wedge shape, characterized by its L-shaped line and horizontal body split. Wide fenders, pop-up headlights, and a sculpted rear end with round taillights and quad exhaust tips complete the striking design. Buyers can choose between a windscreen-less Barchetta configuration or a more conventional Targa variant with a removable hardtop.

The interior is equally minimalist, featuring a two-seater cockpit with red and black upholstery and aluminum accents. While specific chassis details remain undisclosed, Bertone has confirmed a mid-mounted, non-electrified V6 engine that delivers an impressive 493 horsepower. This significant power upgrade transforms the once-humble concept into a high-performance machine.

Andrea Mocellin, lead designer, explained the design philosophy: “We aimed to preserve the spirit of the original 1969 model while incorporating modern performance technology.” The result is a car that blends classic design with cutting-edge engineering, appealing to collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate both style and speed.
