The holiday season is a time for surprises, and while most people unwrap smaller gifts, Google co-founder Sergey Brin seems to have unwrapped something extraordinary—a colossal megayacht. Lürssen, a renowned German shipbuilder, has officially delivered one of the largest private vessels in the world, Dragonfly, to its owner on December 3. Though Lürssen refrains from naming the owner due to industry discretion, reports strongly suggest Brin as the new custodian of this floating marvel.
Dragonfly is an engineering masterpiece, boasting a staggering length of 142 meters (466 feet) and an interior volume of nearly 9,500 gross tons across four luxurious decks. This $450 million megayacht, originally developed as “Project Alibaba,” features cutting-edge design by German Frers and interiors crafted by Nautor Design. Construction began in 2019, with its initial owner reportedly being Russian billionaire Leonid Mikhelson. However, international sanctions led to its eventual sale, likely facilitated through special permissions, to an unsanctioned individual—purportedly Brin.
The megayacht blends an imposing military-inspired exterior with lavish interiors. It features premium amenities, including a cinema, spa, glass-bottom pool, watersports center, and an entire business-focused deck complete with an office, games room, and gym. Two helipads and a helicopter hangar further elevate its exclusivity. A standout innovation is its bespoke double-folding aft platform, transforming the upper deck into a spacious beach club with direct water access.
Dragonfly also prioritizes performance and sustainability, incorporating Lürssen’s Diesel-Electric Hybrid Propulsion system. This advanced technology allows for efficient cruising and reduced emissions, demonstrating a step toward greener luxury travel.
With accommodation for 24 guests in 12 opulent suites and over 2,000 square meters (21,528 square feet) of living space, Dragonfly epitomizes luxury. The vessel joins Brin’s existing “Fly Fleet,” which includes smaller yachts like Butterfly and Firefly, along with various aquatic vehicles. Previously, Brin’s Dragonfly was a comparatively modest 73-meter (240-foot) yacht valued at $80 million—making this acquisition a substantial upgrade in every sense.
Currently, Dragonfly is en route to Barcelona for additional customizations, including railing installation for its unique aft platform. With its extraordinary features and exceptional craftsmanship, Dragonfly sets a new benchmark in the world of megayachts.
