A video depicting a Porsche 911 Carrera laboriously navigating a rough, pothole-filled road in India ignited a social media frenzy, prompting many to question the practicality of such luxury sports cars within the country’s infrastructure. The footage, showing the car struggling on a muddy stretch near a construction site between Delhi and Pune, quickly went viral.
Initial reactions were often laced with sarcasm, with some comparing the situation to “buying a high-end gaming console to play a simple mobile game.” However, the truth behind the video was far from a tale of misfortune.
Sirish Chandran, a seasoned automotive journalist and editor of EVO India magazine, revealed that the challenging drive was a deliberate endurance test, not an accidental mishap. He had undertaken an extensive road trip from Delhi to Pune to assess the Porsche 911’s resilience on Indian roads, having collected the car from its display at the Auto Expo in Delhi.

Chandran emphasized the importance of adapting driving skills to the local environment, stating that “driving slowly is also a skill to be mastered if you want to survive in India.” Despite the demanding route, the Porsche 911 proved remarkably robust. The test involved traversing potholes, speed bumps, and uneven surfaces, yet the car emerged unscathed, with no punctures, scratches, rattles, or warning lights.

In a detailed account, Chandran highlighted the challenges faced during the first day of the journey, including heavy traffic, numerous speed breakers, and varying road conditions. The car’s large wheels and finely tuned suspension handled the terrain effectively, though tyre noise occasionally overshadowed the car’s premium sound system.
A notable feature was the optional high-definition matrix headlights, which significantly enhanced visibility during night drives on India’s often unpredictable highways. The journey also included a stop in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, further showcasing the car’s adaptability.
