Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, urged the automobile industry to balance “economy and ecology” as he emphasized green mobility through electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen fuel cells, and biofuels. Addressing the second Bharat Mobility Global Expo, he called on manufacturers to expand beyond the domestic market and increase exports globally.
Modi underlined the need for mobility solutions that are common, connected, clean, congestion-free, and cutting-edge, aligning with India’s vision for sustainable development. He highlighted green technologies as crucial for reducing fossil fuel imports, driving economic growth, and combating climate change. The PM’s address was attended by industry leaders, reflecting a unified focus on advancing India’s mobility landscape.

During his speech, PM Modi emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting EVs through policies like the National Electric Mobility Mission and the Green Hydrogen Mission. He pointed to India’s remarkable progress in electric mobility, noting a 640-fold increase in EV sales over the past decade. In 2024 alone, 16.8 lakh EVs were sold compared to just 2,600 a decade ago. Modi projected that EV sales could grow eightfold by the end of this decade, signaling vast opportunities for industry players.

Highlighting the role of India’s young population, he said their aspirations and needs are driving the demand for new vehicles. He also noted the growing purchasing power of the middle class, with 25 crore Indians having risen from poverty over the last 10 years. This expanding neo-middle class is now fueling first-time vehicle purchases, boosting the auto sector’s growth.

With 2.5 crore vehicles sold annually, the PM emphasized India’s rising prominence in the global auto market. He also highlighted the government’s focus on combating climate change by promoting solar power, green energy, and alternative fuels.
