Xiaomi YU7: Larger, Potentially Longer-Range Than Tesla Model Y

Xiaomi’s anticipated electric SUV, the YU7, is poised to be a strong competitor in the EV market, particularly against the Tesla Model Y, based on recent filings with the Chinese government. Despite some debate over its naming (it might have been more logical to use the SU7 moniker, reserving the YU7 for a potential future sedan), this second EV from Xiaomi has the potential to become their most popular model.

The YU7’s arrival comes shortly after the launch of the updated Tesla Model Y in China, which features a Cybercab-inspired design and is already a hit. The Model Y is available in rear-wheel-drive and Long-Range all-wheel-drive configurations, offering ranges of 368 miles (593 km) and 447 miles (719 km) respectively, according to CLTC estimates. While Xiaomi hasn’t officially released range figures for the YU7 RWD, the AWD variants appear to outperform the comparable Model Y in range. Curiously, Xiaomi has yet to disclose battery pack capacities for the YU7, but these details are expected to be released soon.

The YU7’s impressive range becomes even more noteworthy considering its larger size compared to the Tesla Model Y. The YU7 measures 196.8 inches (4,999 mm) in length, compared to the Model Y’s 188.8 inches (4,797 mm). The YU7 also boasts a longer wheelbase of 118 inches (3,000 mm) compared to the Model Y’s 113.7 inches (2,890 mm), suggesting a more spacious second row.

Pricing is still pending, but local media suggest a starting price of around ¥250,000 (~$34,700). If accurate, this would undercut the Model Y RWD, which starts at ¥263,500 (~$36,600). While higher-end YU7 versions will naturally cost more, they are expected to be priced competitively with the Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive, which starts at ¥303,500 (~$42,200).

Unfortunately for those outside of China, Xiaomi currently has no plans to sell its vehicles internationally. While a recent report hinted at potential future expansion, it suggested that Xiaomi would first test international markets with limited models to gauge interest before a full-scale launch.
