Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (Idemitsu) and Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) have joined forces in a groundbreaking partnership to advance the development of mass production technology for solid electrolytes. Their collective efforts are geared towards enhancing productivity and establishing a robust supply chain for the mass production of all-solid-state batteries, a pivotal component for battery electric vehicles (BEVs). This collaboration represents a significant step in the journey towards achieving carbon neutrality and the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.

Pioneers in Battery Technology

Both Idemitsu and Toyota have a rich history of leadership in various fields, including material development related to all-solid-state batteries. Idemitsu has been actively engaged in research and development of elemental technologies for all-solid-state batteries since 2001, while Toyota embarked on a similar journey in 2006. Their shared expertise and commitment make them formidable partners in this ambitious venture.

Sulfide Solid Electrolytes: A Game-Changer

The collaboration between Idemitsu and Toyota focuses on sulfide solid electrolytes, a material with immense potential for achieving high capacity and output in BEVs. This phase aims to ensure the market launch of BEVs equipped with all-solid-state batteries by 2027-28.

Phase 3: Planning for Full-Scale Mass Production

The final phase hinges on the results of Phase 2, where both companies will strategize the future of full-scale mass production and commercialization. This planning stage is pivotal in ensuring a smooth transition to widespread production of all-solid-state batteries.

Sustainable Supply Chain

Idemitsu has been diligently developing production technologies for lithium sulfide, an intermediate material crucial in solid electrolyte production. By utilizing by-products generated during petroleum refining, the company aims to establish a stable supply system. Additionally, Idemitsu is expanding the capacity of its pilot facilities, taking significant steps toward realizing commercial all-solid-state batteries by 2027-28.
