Nagaland Introduces First Air-Conditioned Green Vehicle

A significant step towards eco-friendly transportation was taken in Nagaland on Friday as the state launched its inaugural air-conditioned green vehicle (ACGV). The 14-seater eco-friendly bus, introduced by the city-based NGO Greenland Nagaland (GN), was unveiled by K Tokugha Sukhalu, Advisor for Food & Civil Supply and Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection.

Sukhalu emphasized the importance of adopting environmentally sustainable practices, noting that while Nagaland’s pollution levels were not as severe as in cities like Delhi, the influx of older vehicles from other states was a growing concern. He highlighted the need to address vehicle congestion in all districts and encouraged GN to expand the availability of ACGVs throughout the state.

The state government, Sukhalu informed, is actively working on innovative schemes to mitigate traffic congestion, especially during the Hornbill Festival. He suggested that GN could collaborate with the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) to utilize ACGVs for transporting tourists during the festival, thereby easing traffic congestion and promoting eco-friendly travel.

Given the increasing number of tourists visiting Nagaland from both within and outside India, Sukhalu urged GN to bring in additional ACGVs to facilitate smoother transportation during the Hornbill Festival. He also encouraged young people to take on leadership roles, emphasizing the importance of active participation in shaping the future.

Dr Longri Jamir, President of GN, highlighted the state’s immense tourism potential and outlined the NGO’s plans to collaborate with travel agencies domestically and internationally to attract more tourists to Nagaland.

The ACGV, as revealed by GN treasurer Dr Maongwati Aier, is equipped with six glass doors and windows, offering tourists a panoramic view of the surrounding landscapes. The vehicle is claimed to be pollution-free, and the NGO aims to deploy one ACGV in each of Nagaland’s 16 districts by November. Dr Swaraj Mukherjee, GN secretary, disclosed that the management of ACGVs would be overseen by GN in collaboration with local entrepreneurs in each district. He also announced that 16 more ACGVs would be available in the state, primarily for tourist transportation during the Hornbill Festival.
