Pope Francis recently received an early Christmas gift from Mercedes-Benz: a custom-built Popemobile based on the G 580 with EQ technology. This new addition continues the tradition of G-Class-based Popemobiles, a line previously used by Popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis himself.
Developed in collaboration with the Vatican, the vehicle boasts a striking pearl white exterior and an open-top design. To accommodate this design, extensive modifications were made. The left rear door was removed, reconstructed, and seamlessly integrated into the body, while the right rear door was redesigned to open in a reverse or “suicide” style.
Inside, the unique Popemobile features a raised platform with a centrally positioned, height-adjustable swiveling seat designed for the Pope. This specially crafted seat allows Pope Francis to move freely and address audiences from multiple angles. Additional seating includes two jump seats positioned behind the papal chair. Rear steps and platforms are also incorporated to accommodate security personnel. For inclement weather, a removable hardtop is available to provide some protection.
While Mercedes has not released specific performance details for the custom Popemobile, the all-electric G-Class is equipped with a quad-motor all-wheel-drive system, fine-tuned for the slow speeds necessary during public appearances. The standard G 580 model comes with a 116 kWh battery, producing 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque. This allows the regular version to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, reach a top speed of 112 mph, and achieve a range of approximately 239 miles.
This Popemobile marks the continuation of a long-standing relationship between Mercedes and the Vatican. The company has been supplying vehicles to the papacy since 1930, when Pope Pius XI received a Nürburg 460 Pullman, marking the start of nearly a century of collaboration.
