Mazda Motor Corporation has announced plans to construct a new module pack plant for automotive cylindrical lithium-ion batteries in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. This facility will manufacture modules and packs utilizing cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells sourced from Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. These completed battery packs are destined for Mazda’s inaugural battery electric vehicle (BEV) developed on a dedicated EV platform, with production slated for Mazda’s Japanese manufacturing plant. The annual production capacity of this new plant is projected to reach 10 GWh.

Aligned with its 2030 Management Policy, Mazda is actively pursuing electrification technologies through a multi-solution strategy. This approach aims to offer a diverse range of technological options that cater to customer preferences and evolving regulatory landscapes, ultimately contributing to the mitigation of global warming.

In May 2023, Mazda and Panasonic Energy formalized an agreement for the procurement of automotive-grade cylindrical lithium-ion batteries. Subsequently, in September 2024, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) granted approval for the expansion of battery production and technological advancements through this collaborative effort, recognizing it as a crucial step towards ensuring a stable supply of storage batteries. Leveraging the battery module packs produced at this new plant, Mazda intends to deliver distinctive battery-electric vehicles that prioritize design excellence, user-friendliness, and extended driving range. Furthermore, this plant is anticipated to stimulate local employment and economic growth.

Mazda remains committed to evolving the essence of “Joy of Driving” through its “Radically Human” philosophy, striving to deliver “Joy of Living” by enriching the daily lives of its customers with exhilarating mobility experiences.
