Amidst growing speculation about Renault-Nissan’s ambitious plans for the Indian market, a significant development has surfaced. The Dacia Spring EV, a compact electric hatchback from Renault’s global sub-brand, has been caught on camera undergoing rigorous testing in Chennai. While heavily camouflaged, the unmistakable Dacia badge at the front confirms the identity of this electrified contender.
The Spring EV’s recent update has infused the model with a sportier character, drawing design cues from the popular Duster. A revamped front fascia featuring a Duster-inspired grille, sharp LED headlamps, and skid plates enhances its road presence. Black cladding, muscular wheel arches, and Y-shaped LED taillights contribute to an SUV-like stance. However, the test mule’s steel wheels suggest that this might be an early-stage prototype.
Inside, the Spring EV promises a modern cabin with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and the convenient YouClip accessory mounting system. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are also expected to be on board. Practicality is ensured with a 35-litre front trunk and a 308-litre boot.
Powering the Dacia Spring EV is an electric motor available in two states of tune – 44 hp and 64 hp. A 26.8 kWh battery pack is claimed to deliver a driving range of over 220 km on a single charge. Both AC and DC charging options are offered, with the latter supporting bi-directional charging for added versatility.
The Spring EV’s arrival in India is likely to disrupt the burgeoning electric vehicle segment. It will compete directly with the likes of the Citroen eC3 and upcoming offerings from Volkswagen, Renault, and Fiat. While the exact specifications for the Indian market remain under wraps, the Dacia Spring EV’s presence on our roads hints at Renault’s serious commitment to electrification in the country.
