BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle giant, is gearing up to introduce a mid-cycle refresh for its popular Dolphin EV in 2025. This update, four years after the Dolphin’s initial debut, will bring a host of visual enhancements and a new powertrain option.
Leaked images from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have already given us a glimpse of the refreshed Dolphin. The most striking change is the redesigned front fascia, featuring slimmer headlights that extend onto the fenders, reminiscent of the original Chevrolet Bolt. The grille and bumper intakes have also been revised for a cleaner look. While the side profile remains largely unchanged, the Dolphin will sport new 16-inch and 17-inch wheel designs. The rear end gets a subtle makeover with updated taillight graphics and a revised bumper.
The 2026 Dolphin will grow slightly in size, measuring 4,280 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase. This makes it 155 mm longer than the original Chinese-spec Dolphin but only 10 mm shorter than the global version.
While the interior remains shrouded in mystery, we can expect some updates to the tech features and interior trim.
Powertrain options for the refreshed Dolphin will include three different electric motors: a 94 hp, a 174 hp, and a 201 hp unit. The 94 hp and 201 hp options are carried over from the current model, while the 174 hp motor is a new addition. All variants will be paired with BYD’s Blade LFP battery packs, with capacities of 44.93 kWh and 60.48 kWh. These batteries are expected to offer a range of up to 520 km (323 miles) on the Chinese CLTC cycle.
The refreshed BYD Dolphin is likely to hit the Chinese market in mid-to-late 2025, followed by other global markets. With its stylish design, improved performance, and competitive pricing, the Dolphin is poised to continue its success in the growing electric vehicle market.
