BMW’s iX3: A Sneak Peek at the Future of Electric SUVs

BMW Neue Klasse X Concept

The upcoming launch of BMW’s all-electric iX3 marks a significant shift for the automaker, as this SUV will not only set itself apart from the combustion-engine X3 but also be the debut production model on BMW’s much-anticipated Neue Klasse platform and design philosophy.

Though the official unveiling is still months away, recently surfaced patent drawings offer a glimpse into the iX3’s design, even if in lower resolution. We’ll update to higher-quality images as they become available, but these initial visuals already reveal key design elements worthy of note.

From Vision to Production

The iX3 production model closely mirrors the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X Concept first shown in March 2024. However, several adjustments have been made to accommodate practical needs. For instance, futuristic fin-shaped side mirrors were replaced with standard mirrors, and flush-mounted door handles were swapped for pop-out versions—both adjustments necessary for mass-market production.

The patent images show that the production version has scaled-down wheels (which may vary by trim), a smaller panoramic roof, and subtly reformed bumpers and thicker pillars, all aimed at making the design more practical for everyday use. While the concept’s bold LED headlight and taillight designs are not shown in the patents, we can expect the production model to feature slightly toned-down lighting graphics. Additionally, the rear side windows retain the concept’s Y-shaped element, though it’s presented more subtly here.

Interior and Technology

Details on the iX3’s interior remain unrevealed by the patent drawings, but the production model is expected to feature BMW’s digital cockpit setup. This will likely include a central trapezoidal touchscreen and BMW’s new Panoramic Vision display, which spans the base of the windshield. Unlike the concept’s avant-garde interior, the production model will probably favor darker tones, a more conventional steering wheel, and increased use of sustainable materials.

Neue Klasse Platform and Powertrain Options

The iX3 will be the first model to utilize BMW’s Neue Klasse EV platform, which it will share with the upcoming i3 sedan (recently seen in prototype form). The platform’s 800-volt system will support both single- and dual-motor configurations, with power outputs expected to range from 300 to 600 hp.

BMW’s Neue Klasse lineup will also introduce a new generation of battery technology that provides a 20% increase in energy density, along with a 30% improvement in charging speed and range. These advanced batteries could enable ranges exceeding 800 km (around 500 miles) on a single charge, although it’s uncertain if the iX3 will reach this maximum.

Bi-Directional Charging and Power Accessibility

A standout feature of the Neue Klasse EVs, including the iX3, will be bi-directional charging. This will allow owners to power their homes using their vehicles through the BMW DC Wallbox Professional, or even charge appliances directly from the vehicle.

Future Model Differentiation

The iX3’s visual distinction from the current CLAR-based X3 may be unique within the Neue Klasse lineup, as BMW’s upcoming compact sedans, such as the i3 and next-gen 3-Series, appear to incorporate the Neue Klasse styling with slight variations in proportion. This strategy aligns with BMW’s approach across other model pairs like the i5/5-Series and i7/7-Series, which will continue with future models, including the iX5/X5.

BMW’s iX3 signals the automaker’s evolution toward an electrified future, embracing a new design and technological era with the Neue Klasse platform—aiming to deliver advanced features, practical functionality, and an innovative aesthetic for EV enthusiasts.
