All-Electric Range Rover Velar Spotted During Winter Testing

Land Rover’s electric vehicle offensive is gaining momentum. While plans for a rapid rollout of EVs by 2026 have been adjusted, the British luxury brand is preparing a wave of electric models, including the highly anticipated battery-powered Range Rover Velar. Spy photos captured during winter testing offer a glimpse into this exciting new addition to the Land Rover lineup.

A Latecomer, But a Pioneer

While the full-size Range Rover EV will claim the title of Land Rover’s first electric vehicle later this year, the Velar EV won’t be far behind. Its launch is expected in early 2026, with showroom arrivals likely in mid-2026 as a 2027 model. Though not the first EV from the brand, the Velar will be the first to utilize Land Rover’s new EMA electric vehicle architecture, a significant step forward in the brand’s electrification strategy. The larger Range Rover EV, in contrast, will employ an electrified version of the MLA platform, also used in its ICE-powered counterparts.

Sporty Design, Potential Surprises

The electric Velar retains the distinctive design language of its combustion-engine sibling, featuring a low roofline and a tapering side window profile that exudes a sporty aesthetic. The rear window, however, is strikingly shallow and appears to be covered by a plastic panel, raising questions about its functionality. This design cue echoes the approach taken by Jaguar’s new EV sedan, which notably lacks a rear window.

Intriguingly, the spy shots hint at potential changes to the Velar’s interior layout. While the current model offers two rows of seating, the positioning of the rear door relative to the rear wheel suggests the possibility of an optional third-row, albeit likely for occasional use. Alternatively, this design tweak could translate into a significantly larger cargo space.

Design Refinements and Familiar Touches

The prototype showcases familiar design elements, including the clamshell bonnet, large alloy wheels, and flush door handles, all reminiscent of the current Velar. However, the rear end receives a notable update, with the license plate relocating from the hatch to the bumper below, mirroring the design language of the recently introduced Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.

Competition and Performance Expectations

Upon its market debut, the Range Rover Velar EV will enter a competitive landscape, vying for attention alongside rivals like the Porsche Macan Electric. In terms of power and performance, the Velar EV is expected to be closely aligned with the Macan Electric. For reference, the base Macan Electric offers two-wheel drive and 355 hp, while the top-tier Turbo Electric boasts an impressive 630 hp. Land Rover will need to deliver a compelling combination of performance, luxury, and range to capture market share in this segment.
