Acura RSX Makes a Comeback as an Electric SUV with a New Platform

Acura RSX

Acura has officially announced the return of the RSX nameplate, but this revival may surprise fans of the early 2000s coupe. The new RSX reimagines itself as a fully electric SUV, marking a significant milestone in Acura’s journey toward electrification. Unlike the ZDX, which shares General Motors’ platform, the RSX will be built on Honda’s all-new in-house EV platform. This development is part of Acura’s broader strategy to recover lost market share after experiencing declines in 2024. It will also be the first vehicle produced at Honda’s revamped EV Hub in Ohio, signaling the automaker’s commitment to innovation in the electric vehicle space.

Honda’s Advanced EV Platform

The RSX will benefit from Honda’s newly developed EV platform, showcased at CES 2025 through the Honda 0 Series prototypes. This platform prioritizes lighter construction and reduces the overall height needed for battery integration, addressing key challenges in electric vehicle design.

The RSX will be the first Acura model to roll off the assembly line at Honda’s Ohio EV Hub, which is undergoing a $700 million transformation across its Marysville, East Liberty, and Anna Engine plants. The Anna facility will produce Honda’s innovative Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) using advanced megacasting techniques.

A Shift from Coupe to SUV

When Acura trademarked the RSX name, many enthusiasts anticipated a sporty coupe, similar to its predecessor. However, the RSX follows a growing trend of transforming coupe-inspired designs into SUVs. Acura’s spokesperson defended this decision, stating that the RSX name aligns with the brand’s vision for its all-electric SUV, rather than revisiting the past coupe.

Design and Launch Timeline

Drawing inspiration from Acura’s Performance EV Concept, the RSX features a sleek but conventional design, reminiscent of models like the BMW X6 and Tesla Model Y. While the dramatic elements of the NSX-inspired rear have been toned down, the vehicle retains a distinct presence.

Prototype testing for the RSX begins this week, with its showroom debut expected in early 2026. Acura’s bold step forward with the RSX underscores its dedication to a sustainable, electric future.
