Government records indicate the Cybertruck initially offers dual- and tri-motor options, with potential inclusion of a single-motor version later.

As the highly anticipated 2024 Tesla Cybertruck gears up for its November delivery debut, details have emerged from a document published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This document provides insights into the Cybertruck's motor configurations and an approximation of its weight.

Cybertruck Deciphered: The NHTSA document serves as a key to decoding the vehicle identification number (VIN) for all 2024 Tesla models. Among its seventeen digits, two key points stand out.

Motor Configurations: The eighth digit within the VIN denotes the vehicle's motor and drive unit, revealing two specific configurations for the Cybertruck. "D" signifies a dual-motor variant, while "E" designates a tri-motor Performance model. Notably, the document does not mention the initially promised single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version that was intended to start at $39,900. Its absence suggests that this option may not be available for the 2024 model, or perhaps in the foreseeable future.

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The sixth digit in the VIN corresponds to the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, signifying the maximum loaded weight of the vehicle, inclusive of the vehicle itself, passengers, and cargo. Two GVWR ratings are associated with the Cybertruck: "G" indicates a GVWR between 8001 and 9000 pounds, while "H" signifies a GVWR between 9001 and 10,000 pounds.

Weight Estimations: While the exact weight of the Cybertruck remains undisclosed, these ratings suggest that the truck's weight is likely around 7000 pounds, with specific variants possibly exceeding 8000 pounds. For context, the Rivian R1T carries a GVWR of 8532 pounds, the F-150 Lightning boasts a GVWR ranging from 8250 to 8550 pounds, and the GMC Hummer EV pickup is rated at 10,550 pounds. These GVWRs generally exceed the actual vehicle weights by approximately 1000 to 2000 pounds. Detailed specifications are expected upon the Cybertruck's first deliveries next month.
