Mercedes-Benz S-Class Facelift Delayed, Renderings Offer Glimpse of New Design

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Mercedes-Benz has reportedly postponed the facelifted S-Class launch until late 2025 or potentially the first half of 2026. This delay, while perhaps disappointing for some, allows Mercedes more time to refine its flagship sedan. Given the S-Class’s esteemed reputation, this extra development time is likely to be beneficial.

As this is a mid-cycle refresh rather than a full redesign, the updated S-Class will retain the current platform and largely the same powertrain options. The most significant changes will be aesthetic, and renderings provide insight into the potential design direction.

The updated S-Class is expected to feature redesigned headlights, incorporating Mercedes’ new signature three-pointed star daytime running lights, previously showcased on the 2023 CLA Concept. These distinctive lights are anticipated to appear on other Mercedes models in the future. Renderings depict these updated headlights in detail, along with a larger grille observed on recent test vehicles.

A reshaped front bumper, reminiscent of the sporty S63, is also expected, complete with revised air intakes. However, significant changes along the sides are unlikely due to the high cost of altering body panels.

The rear of the S-Class will also receive updates, primarily focused on the taillights. Prototypes have revealed redesigned taillights with new LED signatures, giving the car a more contemporary appearance.

Interior enhancements are also anticipated, potentially including a redesigned dashboard with a Hyperscreen display similar to that found in the all-electric EQS. While specific software updates remain unconfirmed, the system will likely incorporate the latest MBUX advancements.

The current model’s powertrains are expected to carry over. These could include a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing 442 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, and a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 generating 496 hp. The high-performance S63 E Performance is also expected to receive the facelift, likely continuing to deliver its impressive 791 hp and 1,055 lb-ft of torque.

The ultra-luxurious Maybach variant will also receive similar updates, including revised front and rear styling, the three-pointed star lighting motif, and an upgraded interior. Its debut is expected to coincide with the standard S-Class refresh.
