Mazda’s iconic MX-5 Miata, a beloved choice for driving enthusiasts, is about to get even more thrilling. Later this year, Mazda will launch the production version of the MX-5 Spirit Racing, a performance-oriented variant first previewed at the Tokyo Auto Salon.
This revival of Mazda’s performance focus comes after the discontinuation of its Mazdaspeed division over a decade ago. With the rise of performance sub-brands from competitors like Toyota (Gazoo Racing) and Hyundai (N), Mazda is re-entering the performance arena with Mazda Spirit Racing, and the MX-5 is its first offering.

According to BestCarWeb, the production model is expected to be nearly identical to the Tokyo Auto Salon concept and will be released in Japan this November. Unfortunately for global MX-5 fans, the Spirit Racing variant is initially limited to just 200 units and will be exclusive to the Japanese market. However, if demand is strong enough internationally, Mazda may consider expanding availability.

The MX-5 Spirit Racing distinguishes itself with a range of visual and mechanical upgrades. Externally, it sports a new front splitter, side skirts, black Rays TE37 six-spoke wheels, red brake calipers, black badging, and black decals. Inside, the cabin features Recaro seats, four-point harnesses, and red contrast stitching.

Performance enhancements are equally impressive. The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine receives new camshafts, pistons, an exhaust manifold, and a new cylinder head, boosting output to 197 hp and increasing torque compared to the standard MX-5. Handling is also enhanced with Bilstein dampers, underbody stiffening, and specialized tires. These upgrades promise to make the already nimble roadster even more engaging to drive.
