Maxus eTerron 9 Ditches Electric Powertrain for Diesel in China Launch

SAIC’s Maxus eTerron 9, initially unveiled as an electric pickup at the IAA Hanover Auto Show, is set to launch in China on December 18 as a diesel-powered vehicle under the name Maxus Interstellar X. This marks a significant shift from the vehicle’s initial electric focus.

The Interstellar X will debut SAIC’s new πPlus 2.5T diesel engine, delivering 165 kW of power and 520 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This contrasts sharply with the vehicle’s earlier iterations. First previewed as the GST concept at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show, it was presented as an EV with features highlighting an outdoor lifestyle, including a drone housed in the frunk and space for mountain bikes. The production version shown in Germany in September also retained the electric powertrain.

Visually, the diesel Interstellar X differs from its EV counterpart primarily in the front fascia. It features a prominent grille, while the EV has a largely closed-off front end and distinct lighting. Beyond this, both versions share similar dimensions (5500/2005/1860 mm) and a 3300 mm wheelbase, although longer versions measuring 5630 mm (standard) and 5620 mm (off-road) are also reported.

Built on a body-on-frame chassis, the Interstellar X features double-wishbone independent front suspension and air suspension. It also boasts three mechanical differential locks (front, center, and rear). Off-road variants offer a choice of three-piece, five-piece, or multi-link rear suspension systems. Towing capacities vary: 3300 kg or 3495 kg for off-road models and 3500 kg for the standard version.

The interior boasts dual 12.3-inch screens, a JBL sound system, a rearview streaming mirror, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and 50W wireless phone charging.

It remains uncertain whether the EV version of the Maxus Interstellar X will launch alongside the diesel model in China on December 18.
