Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has issued a recall for approximately 16,759 Range Rover models in the United States due to a potential front suspension issue. The recall affects vehicles manufactured between 2014 and 2016.
The problem lies with the front suspension upper knuckle joint, which may develop a crack. If this occurs, the entire joint could potentially detach, significantly compromising the vehicle’s handling and increasing the risk of an accident.
The affected Range Rovers were produced at JLR’s Solihull plant in the UK during two specific periods: October 1, 2014, to March 31, 2015, and November 2, 2015, to March 16, 2016. The faulty component was sourced from a Taiwanese supplier, SuperAlloy Industrial.
JLR first became aware of the issue in late 2019/early 2020 when a Range Rover experienced a front suspension knuckle failure during low-speed maneuvering. The company continued to monitor similar incidents throughout 2020 and 2021. In 2022, JLR traced the root cause to the faulty supplier component. However, at that time, there was insufficient evidence to suggest an immediate safety risk.
Following further analysis, particularly in markets that use road salt during winter months, JLR issued a recall in the UK and Canada in late 2022. Now, the company has expanded the recall to the United States.
To date, JLR has received 12 claims and field reports in the US related to the suspension issue. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by January 3, 2025, and advised to schedule an appointment with an authorized JLR dealer. During the repair process, technicians will inspect the front suspension knuckle joints for cracks. If a crack is found, the joint will be replaced. If no crack is detected, a retaining bracket will be installed to reinforce the joint.
