Honda Prelude Returns: A Hybrid-Electric Sports Coupe for the Modern Era

Honda Prelude Concept

Honda has officially confirmed the return of the Prelude, set to hit the US market in 2024. However, this isn’t the high-revving sports car from your early 2000s dreams. Instead, the new Prelude embraces a hybrid-electric powertrain, combining sporty aesthetics with advanced driving technology. It introduces features like Honda’s new S+ Shift drive mode, promising sharper simulated gear changes and a more engaging driving experience.

Hybrid Power Meets Dynamic Design

The 2024 Prelude will be built on Honda’s versatile platform, shared with models like the Civic and CR-V. However, it will feature a sportier chassis setup to complement its two-door coupe design. Under the hood, it will use Honda’s proven two-motor hybrid system, also found in the Accord and CR-V hybrids. This setup pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with dual electric motors. While Honda refers to its transmission as “eCVT,” it uses a clutch to engage or disengage the engine instead of a conventional gearbox.

What’s Special About S+ Shift?

The Prelude debuts Honda’s S+ Shift, an enhancement of its existing Linear Shift Control technology. This mode creates the sensation of gear shifts during acceleration, paired with active sound control for auditory feedback. A dedicated button on the center console allows drivers to engage this feature, which synchronizes engine RPM, sound, and digital displays to heighten the driving experience. While it doesn’t include a manual gearbox, drivers can expect paddle shifters to provide greater control.

A New Chapter for the Prelude

First launched in 1978, the Prelude enjoyed five generations before being discontinued in 2001. The sixth generation aims to revive its legacy as a stylish two-door alternative to the Civic. Spy photos suggest the production model will closely resemble the 2023 concept, combining modern design with nostalgic appeal.

Honda’s Vision for a Sustainable Future

The Prelude’s hybrid launch aligns with Honda’s broader goals. The company is celebrating 25 years of hybrid sales in the US, with hybrids now comprising over a quarter of its regional sales. Looking ahead, Honda plans to introduce seven all-electric models under the 0 Series lineup by 2030, beginning with the Prologue crossover and the production version of the Honda 0 Series Saloon in 2026. The automaker aims to achieve 100% battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicle sales by 2040, progressing toward carbon neutrality by 2050.

While it may not offer the raw excitement of an NSX or S2000, the new Prelude brings a refreshing two-door coupe to a market dominated by SUVs and EVs, bridging Honda’s sporty heritage with its sustainable future.
