Genesis may not be synonymous with rugged off-roaders like Land Rover, but the Korean automaker has ventured into uncharted territory with the GV80 Desert Edition. Designed for the iconic Dakar Rally, this one-off SUV combines luxury with off-road capability, offering a unique take on performance. Created specifically for legendary racing driver Jacky Ickx and his daughter Vanina, both experienced racers, the GV80 Desert Edition highlights Genesis’ ambition to step into the realm of adventurous luxury vehicles.
Jacky Ickx, an 80-year-old motorsport icon, brings a wealth of experience to the table, including six Le Mans victories and a 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally win. This GV80 might not match his past desert racers but represents a bold attempt at blending sophistication with rugged performance.

The Making of the Desert Edition
The GV80 Desert Edition was developed in 2024 in collaboration with Dubai-based W Motors. It builds on the standard GV80 with modifications for desert racing. Key upgrades include 20-inch beadlocking wheels with all-terrain tires, wider fender flares adding 1.6 inches to the SUV’s width, and a roof rack equipped to carry extra fuel and camping gear. Additional enhancements like a light bar with yellow foglights and adjustable suspension further bolster its off-road credentials. Though details on suspension upgrades remain vague, it likely includes a lift or long-travel dampers.

Powertrain and Performance
While Genesis hasn’t disclosed powertrain specifics, the Desert Edition likely features the GV80’s most powerful engine—a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 delivering 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, it is well-suited for tackling challenging terrains.

A Tribute to Jacky Ickx
The GV80’s custom livery pays homage to Ickx’s 1983 Dakar-winning helmet design, underscoring the collaboration’s significance. The 2025 Dakar Rally route spanned 3,728 miles through Saudi Arabia, from Bisha to Shubaytah, showcasing the Desert Edition’s capability and endurance.

A Glimpse Into Genesis’ Future?
While the GV80 Desert Edition remains a one-off creation, it hints at Genesis’ potential in the luxury off-road SUV market. With rising demand in this segment, the automaker may have inadvertently discovered a winning formula worth exploring further.
