Genesis is gearing up to enter the world of endurance racing in 2026 with its new GMR-001 LMDh hypercar. However, the ambitious timeline presents a significant challenge, as the company has yet to commence construction of the car, currently possessing only a scale model.
To overcome this hurdle, the newly formed Genesis Magma Racing team will leverage Hyundai’s extensive motorsport expertise, particularly its success in the World Rally Championship. This strategic approach will be most evident in the powertrain.
According to Hyundai Motorsport president Cyril Abiteboul, while a V6 engine might have been the ideal choice for the LMDh, the tight development schedule necessitates a different approach. To expedite the process, Genesis will utilize two of Hyundai’s four-cylinder WRC engines to create a novel V8 configuration.
Specific details regarding this V8 engine remain undisclosed, but it will undoubtedly feature turbocharging and hybridization, as mandated by LMDh regulations. The combined output is limited to 671 horsepower, and the drivetrain will be rear-wheel drive. Abiteboul highlighted the benefits of utilizing existing WRC engines, emphasizing their advantages in terms of weight, fuel efficiency, and ease of maintenance during races.
The GMR-001 will be built upon an Oreca chassis, a platform shared by other prominent LMDh competitors such as Acura and Alpine. Notably, Genesis will diverge from the established norm by forgoing a partnership with an experienced endurance racing team. Instead, the company will solely manage the Genesis Magma Racing team, a decision that could present unique challenges.
To prepare for the 2026 LMDh campaign, Genesis will enter an LMP2 car in the 2025 European Le Mans Series in collaboration with the IDEC Sport team. This strategic move will serve as a crucial learning experience for the Genesis Magma Racing team, allowing them to gain valuable experience in endurance racing and solidify their operational capabilities.
Hyundai Motor Group’s chief creative officer, Luc Donkerwolke, emphasized the significance of this LMP2 program. While acknowledging the potential financial and human resource demands, he explained that it is essential for fostering a cohesive and high-performing team. By participating in the 2025 season, the team will be subjected to the pressures of real-time competition, enabling them to learn and grow together in preparation for the 2026 LMDh challenge.
