Five and a half years after its initial unveiling, the revived De Tomaso brand has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the first production-spec P72. This limited-production hypercar, restricted to just 72 units globally, is set to commence deliveries with a starting price of approximately €1.6 million ($1.67 million).
The inaugural production example showcases a striking naked carbon fiber finish, though minor imperfections in the carbon fiber alignment between the front quarter panels and the hood are evident. However, it’s crucial to note that this particular car is not destined for a customer. It will undergo further refinement, including the application of a paint finish, as part of the final dynamic validation process to ensure the driving experience lives up to the legendary De Tomaso name.
At the heart of the P72 lies a meticulously hand-assembled carbon fiber chassis, crafted by a dedicated team. This foundation supports an interior that is nothing short of extraordinary. While the exterior is undeniably captivating, the interior truly steals the show.
The cabin features bespoke seats that bear a striking resemblance to high-end designer furniture, upholstered in luxurious cream-colored leather. A captivating copper-colored shifter with an exposed mechanism graces the center console, complemented by a cluster of six custom-made gauges that dominate the dashboard, all adorned with copper accents. De Tomaso aptly describes the P72’s interior as “inspired by the world of jewelry,” a statement that resonates strongly upon closer inspection.
Powering this masterpiece is a potent 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine, delivering a thunderous 750 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, channeled exclusively to the rear wheels.
While the P72 continues its journey towards customer deliveries, De Tomaso remains actively engaged in the development of the track-focused P900. This extreme iteration of the P72 boasts more aggressive aerodynamic enhancements and will be offered with a choice of powertrains: a high-revving, naturally-aspirated V12 or a historic V10 engine sourced from a 1997 Benetton B197 Formula 1 car.
