Citroen India has made a disruptive entry into the compact SUV segment with the launch of the Basalt. Priced aggressively at Rs. 7.99 lakh (introductory ex-showroom), the coupe SUV has already garnered significant attention. Bookings are open with a token amount of Rs 11,001, valid till October 31.
Powertrain and Performance
The Basalt is powered by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine offered in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms. While the NA variant produces 80bhp and 115Nm, the turbocharged version delivers 109bhp and 190Nm (205Nm for AT). Transmission options include a five-speed manual for the NA and a six-speed manual or automatic for the turbo. For detailed mileage figures, visit our website.
Design and Features
The Basalt boasts a stylish coupe SUV design with projector headlamps, LED DRLs, a twin-slat grille, and eye-catching alloy wheels. The interior is equally impressive, featuring a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, and a host of safety features, including six airbags.
Competition and Positioning
Citroen’s pricing strategy for the Basalt is a clear indication of its intent to disrupt the market. Positioned as a ‘big car for sub-4 metre money’, the Basalt directly competes with popular models like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV300, and Maruti Brezza. Its unique coupe-like design and feature-rich package aim to differentiate it from rivals.
With the Basalt, Citroen has showcased its commitment to the Indian market. The car’s aggressive pricing, coupled with its stylish design and feature-packed cabin, is likely to attract a young and aspirational buyer base.
