Hero MotoCorp, India’s leading two-wheeler manufacturer, is expanding its horizons beyond traditional offerings, venturing into the higher displacement segment. Following the introduction of the Maverick 440 motorcycle, the company is gearing up to launch the Xtreme 250R and XMR 250 motorcycles, along with the Xoom 160, an adventure-styled 160cc scooter.
While maxi-scooters have gained popularity in other Asian markets, they haven’t yet achieved significant traction in India. However, evolving consumer preferences and a growing demand for unique and exciting products like the Hero Xoom 160 could potentially shift the market landscape. Currently, the segment is relatively limited, with the Yamaha Aerox 155 being a prominent contender. Hero aims to deliver an experience comparable to the Aerox while ensuring its first 160cc scooter remains accessible and competitively priced.
Spy shots reveal that the Xoom 160 retains many of the design elements showcased by Hero last year. Key features include twin LED headlamps with LED DRLs, a prominent windscreen, an aggressive front beak, and muscular body panels. The scooter features halogen turn indicators, a comfortable-looking seat, and sturdy grab rails for the pillion rider. An upswept exhaust and dual-purpose tires hint at the Xoom 160’s potential for light off-road adventures.
Catering primarily to younger riders, the Xoom 160 boasts a range of advanced features. A keyless system eliminates the need for a traditional key, enabling keyless lock/unlock, ignition control, and even seat release via a key fob. The scooter is equipped with a Bluetooth-enabled, fully digital instrument cluster, offering features such as turn-by-turn navigation.
Practicality is a key focus with the Xoom 160. The scooter features a spacious underseat storage compartment capable of accommodating a full-sized helmet and other essentials. The centrally located fuel tank and filler cap facilitate convenient refueling.
Powering the Xoom 160 is a 160cc, liquid-cooled engine producing 14 bhp. This competes with the Aerox’s 155cc, liquid-cooled engine delivering 14.75 bhp. The Xoom 160 employs standard telescopic front forks and dual rear shock absorbers. Both wheels are equipped with disc brakes, and single-channel ABS comes standard. To maintain a competitive price point, Hero MotoCorp is expected to introduce the Xoom 160 at around Rs 1.20 lakh, significantly undercutting the Yamaha Aerox 155, which starts at Rs 1.49 lakh.
