BMW Unveils the All-New 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe with Enhanced Power and Design

2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe

BMW has recently unveiled significant changes within its design team, signaling that the all-new 2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe could be the last in its line of controversial designs. Despite its resemblance to Kia models, the new 2025 edition offers enhanced power, advanced technology, and more standard features.

While BMW labels it “all-new,” the 2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe is more of a heavily revised version of the outgoing model, similar to its European counterpart, the 1-Series hatchback. The car maintains the same underpinnings but boasts larger dimensions, a revamped interior, a standard dual-clutch transmission, and an increased focus on BMW M parts, making them more integral to the vehicle’s design.

More Power and New Naming Convention

A notable change for the 2025 model is the removal of the “i” suffix from the base 228 model, a feature present in petrol-powered BMWs for years. The 228 now delivers a more powerful output, offering 241 hp compared to the 231 hp of the previous model. The 228 will come in both xDrive all-wheel-drive and sDrive front-wheel-drive configurations, with the sDrive arriving in mid-2025.

For those seeking more power, the M235 xDrive variant will feature a 312 hp engine. Both the 228 and M235 share the same torque figures of 295 lb-ft, available between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. While this marks a 14% increase in torque over the outgoing 228i, it represents an 11% decrease from the 2024 M235i xDrive’s torque output.

Both models feature the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, known as the B48A20O2, which has been refined for better performance. This engine includes updates such as a revised combustion system, direct and port fuel injection, and the Miller combustion cycle. It’s also the same powerplant used in the 2025 Mini John Cooper Works Countryman.

Transmission and Performance Upgrades

Another significant update is the replacement of the eight-speed automatic transmission with a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, promising faster shifts. Vehicles equipped with M-Sport packages will also have access to the “Sport Boost” feature, which optimizes powertrain and chassis settings for maximum performance when the left shift paddle is held down.

The 2025 BMW 228 Gran Coupe xDrive can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, a half-second improvement over its predecessor. The M235 xDrive achieves the same sprint in 4.7 seconds, which is only 0.1 seconds slower than the previous model. Both cars are electronically limited to top speeds of 130 mph, though this can be raised to 155 mph with performance tires.

Additionally, the 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe now comes standard with Adaptive M Suspension across the range, though buyers can opt for conventional suspension if they prefer a smoother ride for daily driving.

Styling and Dimensions

The 2025 2-Series Gran Coupe continues with the polarizing styling of its predecessor, particularly resembling the earlier-released 1-Series. While the addition of a trunk doesn’t fully resolve the design issues, the iconic BMW Hoffmeister Kink remains intact, a design element that has been scaled back in recent models. The grille is another focal point, with BMW offering an illuminated “Iconic” option for this generation.

In the US, all 2025 2-Series Gran Coupes will feature M Tech styling, including sportier front and rear bumpers. The M235 variant stands out with quad tailpipes. Buyers can choose from a wide array of color options, including two “BMW Individual” frozen finishes and a contrasting black roof on select colors.

To further enhance the sportiness, BMW offers an “M Sport Package,” which adds darkened M Shadowline lights, a rear spoiler, and additional Shadowline trim. The 18-inch alloy wheels are standard, with an option to upgrade to 19-inch rims and a choice of all-season, summer, or high-performance tires.

In terms of size, the 2025 model grows slightly, with an overall length increase of 0.7 inches to 179.2 inches and an additional inch in height, making it 56.9 inches tall. The wheelbase (105.1 inches) and width (70.9 inches) remain unchanged.

Interior Enhancements and More Technology

BMW has equipped the base 228 model with more technology than ever before. Standard features now include a 12-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system, cloud-based live navigation, keyless entry, wireless device charging, and auto-dimming mirrors. Additionally, all variants can be unlocked using an Apple or Android phone or an Apple Watch.

The interior also features the new BMW Curved Display, consisting of a 10.25-inch screen for the driver and a 10.7-inch connected display. This setup runs on BMW’s latest iDrive 9 operating system with QuickSelect functionality and supports over-the-air updates.

Leather-free interiors are now standard, with leather being an optional upgrade for the M Sport steering wheel. Sports seats come as standard, with an option to add massage and lumbar functions for the first time in the 2-Series.

Pricing and Availability

The 2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe starts at $39,600 for the two-wheel-drive 228i sDrive, with an additional $1,175 for destination and handling. This version will be available by mid-2025. For those eager to get behind the wheel sooner, the 228i xDrive, priced at $41,600 plus destination fees, will arrive in showrooms in March 2025.

For more power, the M235i xDrive will also be available in March 2025, with a starting price of $49,500, plus the same $1,175 destination fee. These prices reflect a $1,200 increase compared to the outgoing 2024 models.
