Genesis, the luxury arm of Hyundai, has officially announced its entry into the world of motorsports. The Korean automaker will compete in both the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the IMSA series starting in 2026, with its newly unveiled GMR-001 Hypercar.
A Design Inspired by the Future
The GMR-001 is a stunning piece of automotive design, drawing inspiration from Genesis’s futuristic X Gran Berlinetta and X Gran Racer Vision GT concepts. While adhering to LMDh regulations, the hypercar retains distinctive Genesis design elements such as the double horizontal LED lights and a sweeping profile line.
The racecar boasts aggressive aerodynamics, including a prominent front splitter, a vertical fin, and a massive rear wing with an active spoiler. The final livery will incorporate the new Genesis Magma Racing logo.
Powertrain and Performance
While specific details about the GMR-001’s powertrain are yet to be announced, it will undoubtedly adhere to the LMDh regulations. This means a hybrid powertrain with a maximum output of 671 horsepower, with the electric motor contributing 67 horsepower. The car will be rear-wheel drive and weigh a minimum of 1,030 kilograms.
Genesis Magma Racing Team
To spearhead its motorsport endeavors, Genesis has established the Genesis Magma Racing team. Cyril Abiteboul, a seasoned motorsport figure, will lead the team as Team Principal. The driver lineup for the GMR-001 includes experienced racers André Lotterer and Luis “Pipo” Derani.
A Step-by-Step Approach
Before tackling the challenging WEC and IMSA series, Genesis Magma Racing will gain valuable experience by competing in the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) in 2025 with IDEC Sport. This strategic move will allow the team to refine its operations and prepare for the ultimate challenge.
With the GMR-001, Genesis aims to showcase its performance capabilities and brand identity on the global motorsport stage.
