2025 Volkswagen Golf GTI and R: A Mixed Bag for American Enthusiasts

Volkswagen has unveiled details of its 2025 Golf lineup for the American market, offering a bittersweet experience for GTI and R enthusiasts. While the 2025 Golf R boasts increased power, the GTI falls short of European expectations.

The 2025 Golf GTI in the US will produce 242 horsepower, a mere one-horsepower increase from the previous model. Disappointingly, the manual transmission option has been eliminated, leaving only the seven-speed DSG automatic.

On the brighter side, the 2025 Golf R will deliver 328 horsepower, matching its European counterpart and last year’s limited-edition 333 model. However, the manual transmission option has also been dropped for the R.

Both the GTI and R benefit from a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen, addressing visibility issues of the previous model. The GTI’s haptic steering wheel buttons have been replaced with physical controls, while the R retains the less-than-ideal haptic buttons.

The 2025 Golf models feature refreshed styling with new headlights, bumpers, and an illuminated VW logo. The GTI is available in S, SE, and Autobahn trims, while the R is offered in standard and Black Edition variants. Additionally, a Euro Style package is available for the R, offering a more performance-oriented setup with lightweight wheels and an Akrapovic exhaust.

Pricing for the 2025 Golf GTI and R will be announced later this year, but estimates suggest a starting price of around $34,000 for the GTI and $49,000 for the R.
